The Verifyi9 Check Digit Validator will validate the check digits in the Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) on a US Passport, Permanent Resident Card, EAD, foreign passport or other ID document. A visually confirmed invalid check digit is a reliable indicator that the document may be fraudulent, but should be considered with other evidence of fraud.
How to Use the Validator
Single field: Select the “Field type” to be validated. Enter the field data into the “Document number” field. Optionally, enter the field check digit printed on the document. The expected check digit will be displayed in the “CHECK DIGIT” area.
Composite: Enter the field data into the appropriate fields. Enter each field’s check digit from the document in the “CD” field. Optionally, enter the composite check digit in the “Printed” field. The expected composite check digit will be displayed in the “CHECK DIGIT” area.
Full MRZ: Enter every character from each line of the MRZ. Press “Enter” after each line except the last line. The expected composite check digit will be displayed in the “CHECK DIGIT” area. The validation of the individual data fields is displayed below the “CHECK DIGIT” area.
Scanning the MRZ
Tap “Scan MRZ” to open the rear camera, line up the MRZ in the frame, and photograph it. The app reads the zone on the device and fills the active tab: Composite gets each field plus check digits; Full MRZ gets the raw lines. If the camera isn’t available, use Photograph MRZ (still opens the camera on a phone) or Choose photo.
Visually confirm the scanned data as OCR can result in errors. Scan errors can be manually corrected.
The first scan downloads the reader, so it can take a few seconds. After that, shots are quicker. Use a sharp, well-lit photo of the MRZ strip.
